Truffles

UX / Spring 2022

Role: I was responsible for designing the food delivery process through conducting interviews, paper and digital wireframing, low and high-fidelity prototyping, conducting usability studies, accounting for accessibility, and iterating on designs.
Duration: 10 weeks

Truffles food deivery app mockup
Tools used: Figma, Photoshop, pen and paper, Human brain.

The Goal

Design an app for Truffles cafe that enables the user to easily schedule multiple food deliveries at once.

Target Audience:

Students and workers who don’t have time or ability to prepare and pack lunches.

The Problem

Preparing and packing food is time-consuming and challenging for busy working individuals especially when they have limited time windows to have food.

Pain Points

___________________________________

Time

Don’t have time to cook meals.

Process

Placing an order comprises a lot of time-consuming steps.

Product

Nutrition information not available.

Support

Unable to contact customer service.

User Research

___________________________________

I have conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I am designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was working adults who don’t have time to cook meals.

The user group confirmed the initial assumption about the cafe’s customers but research has revealed that time was not the only factor limiting users from cooking at home. Other user problems included obligations, interests, or challenges that make it difficult to get groceries for cooking or go to restaurants in person.

Persona

Alia Aziz

“I help others to stay healthy and choose healthy for myself too”

Age: 32
Education: Doctor of Medicine
Hometown: Albany, NY
Family: Spouse, Child
Occupation: Medical Doctor
Alia works as a medical doctor on a very tight schedule. She works in 12 hours shift every day and twice a month on weekends too. Whatever time she gets from her job she wants to spend with her husband and a little girl. She does not compromise on health and prefers to eat healthy food. She mostly orders nutritional lunch for the energy she needs to function.

Initial Design Concepts

I designed the initial concepts to address the user's pain points. For the home screen, I prioritized a quick and easy ordering process to help users save time.

Paper Wireframes

Low-fidelity Prototype

User Testing Results

I conducted two rounds of usability studies. Findings from the first study helped guide the designs from wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high-fidelity prototype and revealed what aspects of the mockups needed refining.

Round 1 findings

  1. There is no menu option to sign up or login
  2. It is confusing to have “Place an order button” at the top of the page
  3. User wants menu items on the home page

Round 2 findings

  1. Starting an order has too many unnecessary steps
  2. There is no option to save multiple addresses and payment methods
  3. Existing user login is not easily accessible

Mockups

___________________________________

The mockups presented cleaner user flows for selecting a menu item, scheduling an order, and checkout. It also meets user needs for scheduling multiple future orders.

Truffles project

Conclusion

I’ve received positive feedback from my usability study participants. They loved how they could schedule multiple food deliveries. One of my participants said “I love how easy it is”.

Next Steps

  1. further design how the user interacts with different buttons, images, and text.
  2. I would like to conduct another round of usability study to validate if the user pain points have been effectively addressed.
  3. I would like to enhance my sticker sheet to add more options so it can help me and other designers with future projects.
